Austin, TX — Today, Democrats for Education Reform Texas (DFER TX) Executive Director Garry Jones released the following statement on the SCOTUS decision to overturn President Biden’s student loan relief plan:

“For decades under Republican leadership, Texans have been saddled with increasing and unsustainable student debt due to failed policies and disinvestment in public higher education. President Biden took a bold stand last year to provide targeted student loan forgiveness for working families, first-generation college students and the millions of Texans saddled with a lifetime of student debt. Texans responded: nearly 1.4 million Texans were approved for debt relief totaling over $18 billion.

“Texas Republicans responded by immediately joining in legal efforts to undermine the President’s historic move to allow Texans to invest their hard-earned dollars where it matters: their families. Today the Texas GOP’s legal efforts delivered a gut punch to the nearly 1.4 million Texans ready for much-needed relief.

“While first-generation college students, students from low-income families and students of color begin to navigate back-to-back Supreme Court decisions designed to undermine their ability to access the transformative power of higher education, advocates and policymakers must redouble our efforts to create effective and affordable pathways to higher education and career training for ALL students.”
